You’ve launched the campaign, the ads are delivering and the dashboard is filling up with numbers. Then you compare your ad platform, GA4 and actual sales. They tell three different stories.
That doesn’t automatically mean your tracking is broken. Each system counts different things: clicks aren’t sessions, attributed conversions aren’t necessarily confirmed purchases, and reporting windows rarely align perfectly. But it does mean your data deserves a closer look before you make your next budget decision.
The problem isn’t always where you think
Most teams test whether a pixel fires and call it a day. That’s only one link in a much longer chain. A person might click an ad, land on a page, move into a quote tool and complete a purchase on a separate checkout domain. If campaign details disappear along the way, the sale may still happen, but the original source can become difficult to prove.
Privacy settings and consent choices can limit collection. Browser extensions may block scripts. Redirects can strip tracking parameters. A website update might change a form event without anyone noticing. Even perfectly installed tags cannot fix inconsistent campaign naming or poorly defined conversion events.
What to check before you trust the report
Start with one real journey, not a dashboard total. Click a tagged ad link or test URL and check what happens at each step. Does the landing page preserve the campaign details? Does the analytics session begin? Does the important action register once, rather than twice? Does the final conversion match a genuine record in your CRM or transaction system?
Repeat on mobile, through common browsers and across any third-party booking or checkout process.
The goal isn’t to make every reporting platform show identical numbers. It’s to understand where differences come from, what evidence you retain, and which numbers are dependable enough to guide a decision.
